Victim's website to help tackle crime

Anti-vandalism website My Mexborough

By Lee Peace

A CRIME victim has launched an information-sharing website in a bid to encourage people not to turn a blind eye to anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood.

Robert Ritchie, 28, set up www.mymexborough.co.uk

earlier this year after he was the victim of a theft and his Mexborough home became a target for vandals.

Visitors to the site can access a wide range of information including contact numbers for police and council teams, details of crime prevention initiatives such as 'Beat the Burglar' and crime statistics for the Doncaster area.

There is also a link to the council's customer service web page where crime witnesses can submit reports of nuisance behaviour and vandalism which can be used to help catch the culprits.

Mr Ritchie, of Schofield Street, said: "Anti-social behaviour is a long-standing problem on our street. About three years ago I had two 125cc Scooters stolen which were worth over £2,000, a pushbike worth more than £300 and my garden was vandalised causing £150 worth of damage.

"In recent months the houses have had bricks thrown into their gardens and rubbish bins have been tipped over. I set the website up to try and get people to come forward with information so we can try and stop the people who are causing a nuisance."

Robert and his neighbours are now calling for alley gates to be introduced at a walkway behind their homes which has become a major meeting point for young gangs and has become filled with litter.

"The alleyway is a real problem, ideally we are hoping to have alley gates fitted in there and we are also looking at setting up a neighbourhood watch group," said Robert.

Mexborough councillor Sue Phillips, who has met with residents to discuss the problem, said: "This website can only be a good thing and will help in the campaign to reduce anti-social behaviour.

"We are looking at possibly introducing the alley gates in with the pathfinder scheme which covers Schofield Street.

"If the residents form a Neighbourhood Watch group then they may be able to use the Neighbourhood Watch CCTV camera which has been used in other parts of the area."
